Electrolux Design Lab: Homes Appliances for the Future

You probably all know who Electrolux is…you know, that amazing company with the stove top that can boil water in 90 seconds. It is truly amazing technology. Recently the Moonworks team stumbled on the Electrolux Design Lab website and thought our readers would enjoy learning more about the amazing home appliance ideas the contestants are submitting.

What is the Electrolux Design Lab?
Established in 2003, Electrolux Design Lab is an annual global design competition open to undergraduate and graduate industrial design students who are invited to present innovative ideas for household appliances of the future. Each year the competition has a theme and this year it was “The 2nd Space Age.” The goal of the entries this year was to maximize the use of physical space with the vision of how the world will look in the year 2050 (when 74% of the world population will live in an urban environment). Electrolux awards three prizes: 1st place is 5,000 EURO and a 6-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design center. The 2nd prize of 3,000 Euros and 3rd prize of 2,000 Euros are also on offer.

Our favorite of the 8 finalist:

The Snail
– the Snail is a portable cooking/heating device that utilizes a magnetic induction process to heat food. It can be stuck directly onto a pot, pan, mug, etc.. Integrated sensors detect the food being heated and automatically adjust to the appropriate cook time and temperature ensuring cooking perfection every time.

Be sure to watch the video below for all 8 finalists concepts (including the snail).
