The Effect of Heavy Rains on Roofs

In every part of the country, from the seasonally dreary New England to the damp Pacific Northwest, rain must be considered by every homeowner for its long-term effects on roofs and more importantly the homes that roofs are built to protect. Heavy rainfall is a constant and often harsh element, and can prove even the most well-built home to contain weak spots in its roof.  Heavy rains often cause shingles to loosen or be torn away from the home. Over time, the combination of heavy rains and high pressure winds will eat away at a faulty roof, eventually causing physical deterioration and leaking.  Consequently, these leaks can lead to bacteria growth, dry rot and many more adverse effects on unsuspecting residents.

Leaking Roof

Taking the time to repair and maintain a roof on a sunny day is better than finding a leak on a rainy one.

Roof Maintenance Prevents Cracks & Leaks

Since the roof is the first line of defense against the elements, roof maintenance is critical.  Every homeowner should take the time to examine their roof for weak spots or cracks.  Examine around the chimney for cracked sealant, and be sure to use quality outdoor silicone on weathered joints.  Often rain will run down the side of the chimney, and if the sealant is cracked, the excess run-off will then spill into the home.  There might also be black, darkened streaks running along the roof.  These are the result of mold, algae or fungus and usually appear on either shady or north-facing roofs.  Luckily this can be fixed with common roof cleaner products or even household bleach, depending on the size and depth of the issue.

Many roof issues can be fixed by the homeowner, but the best solution is good preparation.  Constant roof checks and good upkeep should ensure against most major roofing issues. It is far better to be safe and protected than to have disaster strike when you and your loved ones least expect it. Remember, rainfall will always happen, and the smart homeowner is prepared for the worst.
